Breaking News: New The Shins Album Is Very Good.

It took about 4 or 5 listens before it sunk in, but now I just can’t stop listening to the new album from The Shins: “Wincing the Night Away.” I’m working on a more detailed review, but suffice to say it is, in a lot of ways, their finest album. It is certainly their most well-crafted and well-produced sounding work.

I’ve also been listening to “The Good, The Bad, and The Queen” which is the newest project from Damon Albarn and DJ Danger Mouse. Good stuff on this disk too. Like a more pop-y and yet more political Gorillaz taking a vacation in the Caribbean and getting rained on. That would make sense if you’ve heard it. Not as earth-moving as “Deamon Days,” but still worth a listen.

And don’t think I’ve forgotten about highlighting the best of ’06… That is still to come.

(testing posting from my phone…)
-Moving sucks.
-We have collected a lot of crap since moving to LA.
-A lot of that is big. And heavy.
-Hiring movers was easily the best decision of 2007.
-I greatly underestimated the mental/emotional impact of moving a mere 5 blocks.
-Julie is fucking awesome.
-I think I’ve forgotten what is like to stayup later than 11pm.
-I need a nap.

A New Chapter in Our LA Story

Tomorrow marks the date of our move from our apartment of nearly 4 years. The one place we have called home in Los Angeles and the place that we have spent the longest in together. In August of 2003, when we moved to LA, it was a pretty terrifying experience. Not only had we left the comfortable and cozy Hamlet of Santa Cruz behind for the bustling metropolis but we were both unemployed and we had less money in our checking account than I’ve currently got in my pocket. Things are much better this time around and I certainly feel much more mentally prepared for the shake-up this time around. Though it will still, obviously, be an adjustment. Things like where we will keep our tooth-brushes, how the sunlight will come-through the window in the morning, and my route home after work are subtle changes that really have a noticeable effect on your psyche. We are only 24 hours away from the physical MOVE, but still many days left of the mental upheaval. But I’m pretty excited about it all…

Still testing…

I’m a little upset that “The Prestige” did not get a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay from the Academy. The novel is not only very good, but reading it gave me a whole new appreciation for the film. The Nolan brothers know how to put together a script and even though the film differs from the book in major ways, the heart of both is still there and when taken in concert, the two works only serve to improve upon the other.

Evidently I couldn’t keep the blog shuttered for too long. I’m going to test the waters on this new space, hosted by wordpress, and see if I stick with it. The old blogger site was really dragging me down. So much histoy there, and yet I could bear to update simply because it had been so long since i updated. I think a fresh-start might be just the thing OctopusHat needs.
